In the latest episode of the Beaufort County Beat podcast, Communications Director Brandon Tester interviews Tiffany Moore, Executive Director of the Beaufort County Behavioral Health Task Force. The discussion focuses on the opioid crisis and its effects on local communities. Moore outlines how Beaufort County is using funds from opioid settlements to improve prevention, treatment, and recovery programs throughout the county.
“Beaufort County is addressing substance use challenges and how opioid settlement funds are being used to expand prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts across the county,” Moore said during the interview.
Recent data from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction show that academic readiness remains a challenge in Beaufort County schools. In the 2022-23 school year, only 18.6% of senior students who took the science portion of the ACT were considered ready for college (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/), while among juniors, 16.5% met this benchmark (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/). For reading, 25.3% of seniors (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/) and 23.7% of juniors (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/) were deemed college-ready. In math, 18.8% of seniors (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/) and 16.9% of juniors (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/) reached college readiness standards.
