CarolinaEast Health System’s Urology team has completed its 100th Aquablation therapy procedure, marking a milestone in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) at the New Bern, North Carolina facility. Aquablation therapy is a minimally invasive, robotic-assisted procedure that uses water to remove prostate tissue causing urinary symptoms associated with BPH.

BPH is a common condition where the prostate gland enlarges and can lead to serious health issues if left untreated. It affects about half of men between ages 51 and 60. Without proper care, complications may include permanent bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones, and incontinence.

Drs. Jeffrey Goodwin, Amanda Ingram, Brian McGillick, and Matthew Pierce from CarolinaEast Physicians are now offering this treatment option to patients experiencing lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH.

Dr. Ingram performed the 100th Aquablation procedure on September 19. She said: “We have observed outstanding outcomes in our patients following Aquablation therapy. This innovative procedure offers significant relief from BPH symptoms and contributes meaningfully to an improved quality of life.”

One patient, David Hodges, underwent Aquablation therapy in October 2024 after two years of medication for frequent urination caused by BPH. He shared his experience: “This procedure has been life changing,” said Hodges. “I no longer take medication, I find myself having to remind myself to use the restroom and my relationship with my wife of 36 years is back to normal. Dr. Goodwin and his staff are amazing and I would recommend him and the procedure to anyone that is dealing with prostate issues. I pray that others have the success that I have had.”

Aquablation therapy uses real-time ultrasound imaging for personalized treatment planning tailored to each patient’s anatomy. The technology allows surgeons to target specific areas of the prostate while preserving functions related to continence and sexual health.

Dr. Goodwin commented on the center’s commitment: “We are committed to remaining at the forefront of medical technology for our patients in Eastern NC,” added Dr. Goodwin, Urologist. “Aquablation therapy offers a highly effective treatment option, and we are proud to contribute to the advancement of men’s health through its implementation.”
