After vetoing one resolution, the United States has created another draft sent to the United Nations in hopes of stopping terrorists in Israel. Senator Thom Tillis emphasized, “Israel has the right to defend itself and its people.” He further stated, “As its friend and ally, we must do what we can to support them in efforts to defeat Hamas.”
In response to recent missile and drone attacks, the Department of Defense (DOD) has deployed assets in the Red Sea and surrounding areas to deter groups involved in the Israel and Hamas conflict. Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder acknowledged the potential for escalating conflicts in the region. Ryder outlined the steps the Secretary of Defense must take to ensure stability. Already, three land attack cruise missiles and drones launched from Yemen have been intercepted.
The United States proposed a draft to the United Nations Security Council on Saturday. This draft emphasizes Israel’s right to defend itself and calls for Iran to cease exporting arms to terrorist groups across the Middle East. The resolution also emphasizes the protection of civilians, including those seeking safety from terrorist attacks. To pass, the draft requires nine votes in favor and no vetoes from Russia, China, the United States, France, or Britain.
President Biden has shown continued support for Israel during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths in Israel and Gaza since the beginning of the month. Despite the airstrikes persisting due to a lack of resources to prevent them, Biden has remained a staunch supporter of Israel. However, his support has sparked controversy among global leaders, leading to resignations of State Department officials over his decision.
