Pitt County will house inmates temporarily as the Beaufort County jail gets needed repairs.
The Beaufort County Board of Commissioners voted on June 12 to move inmates from its jail to Pitt County temporarily while repairs are made, WITN reported.
Beaufort County Manager Brian Alligood told WITN that the commissioners voted 4-3 in favor of moving the inmates. The date when the inmates will be moved to Pitt County has not been determined but could happen soon.
The inmates need to be moved so repairs that are needed could be completed at the county jail, WITN reported. Approximately 96 inmates could be moved to Pitt County.
Pitt County typically gets $100 per inmate per day and that is what Beaufort County is expected to pay, WITN reported. Beaufort would be able to provide security for the prisoners it sends to the Pitt County facility, WITN reported. Pitt would provide food and other necessities.
