Republican North Carolina Sen. Bob Steinburg (R-Camden) questioned Gov. Roy Cooper’s declaration requiring everyone to wear a face mask to combat the COVID-19 epidemic saying it doesn’t make sense.
“When I was a kid the only masked men I knew of in the US were the Lone Ranger, robbers and killers, klansmen and surgeons with supporting medical personnel,” Steinburg said on his Facebook page June 27. “Today, in NC our Gov. Roy Cooper is saying all 10-million four hundred thousand of us must be masked when leaving our homes to help prevent the spread of COVID 19.”
Steinburg said as of June 27 there were 60,537 confirmed cases of the virus in the state, 56% of those from just 15 counties. He said the remaining 85 counties make up the rest but many of those are rural counties that have avoided becoming hot spots for the illness.
“Hospitalized are 888 overall with 1,319 deaths,” Steinburg said in his Facebook post. “And we have an entire state of 10,400,000 being asked to wear masks? I ask you, has Gov. Cooper again overreached himself in his current order calling for us all to wear masks statewide? I have my own opinion. What’s yours?”
