Sen. Bob Steinburg (R-Chowan) recommended parents in North Carolina apply for an Opportunity Scholarship to send their children to a nonpublic school.
“For those who have children in schools, this is a great chance to take advantage of the North Carolina opportunity scholarship so that your child has a genuine chance at in-person learning and social interaction with other children, which is what experts keep telling us is needed for long term development,” Steinburg said in a July 27 Facebook post.
Steinburg’s recommendation is in response to a July 21 news release from Senate President Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) about state-based private schools being open for in-class instruction while public schools remain closed in the aftermath of COVID-19,
The Opportunity Program provides up to $4,200 per year in tuition assistance for students to attend a nonpublic school. Eligibility is based on household income. The deadline to apply for the program is Monday, Aug. 31.
