Roanoke Rapids Police Department issued the following announcement on Jul. 28.
We have received a few fraud related calls this week and wanted to make our citizens aware. The first one revolved around a person selling dogs. They stole the identity of a local citizen and even showed a NC ID online to the victim. The victim paid money to the "seller" online and then they got blocked and couldn't reach them any more. It isn't recommended that citizens pay money over facebook or through gift cards.
The second scam is related to IRS calls telling the victim that they are going to be arrested and that local law enforcement has a warrant on them. They tell the victim that they need to go to a store and get gift cards such as Amazon or Playstation and send the codes to the scammer.
No legitimate business whether it is social security, the IRS or any other business will ever do business in that manner.
You can always contact the police department if you get a call you are uneasy about.
