CITY OF ROANOKE RAPIDS: All-Way Stop Coming Soon To Marshall Street

New

City of Roanoke Rapids issued the following announcement on Aug. 13.

In response to safety concerns, the Roanoke Rapids Department of Public Works will install an all-way stop at the intersection of Marshall Street and East 13th Street. Drivers should slow down and expect to find crews working at the intersection.

Currently, only E. 13th Street traffic is required to stop at the intersection of Marshall Street. Next week, weather permitting, crews plan to install new stop signs on Marshall Street, creating an all-way stop at the intersection. Additional warning signage will be installed to alert motorists to the new traffic pattern.

Four-Way/All-Way Stop Rules. Drivers approaching a four-way stop should follow these right-of-way rules:

• The first vehicle to the intersection has the right-of-way ahead of any vehicle that has not yet arrived;

• When two or more vehicles reach an intersection at the same time, the vehicle to the right has the right-of-way;

• The vehicle with the right-of-way may move straight ahead or, if legal and after signaling, turn left or right;

• When two facing vehicles approach an intersection at the same time, both drivers can move straight ahead or turn right.  If one driver is going straight while the other wants to turn left, the driver who wants to turn left must yield.  The driver who is traveling straight ahead has the right-of-way; and

• Even with the right-of-way, remember to use the appropriate turn signals and be careful to avoid hitting other vehicles and/or pedestrians.

For more information about the rules of the roadway, contact the Roanoke Rapids Police Department at 252-533-2810.

Background. The Police Department recommended the establishment of a four-way (all-way) stop as a traffic control measure in response to law enforcement statistics and citizen complaints. On July 20, 2021, the Roanoke Rapids City Council adopted Ordinance No. 2021.10 amending the Traffic Code to be effective upon installation of all-way stop signage at the intersection of Marshall Street and 13th Street.
