Hassell ranked first in North Carolina for the percentage of households receiving food stamps in 2020, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

There were 17 Hassell households (77.3 percent) who received food stamps. Hassell's population was 34 in 2020.

The cities with the lowest percentage of households receiving food stamps in the state were Southern Shores, Washington Park and Westport. In these cities, 0.3 percent of households received food stamps - 77 percent less than Hassell.
