City of New Bern issued the following announcement on Dec. 26.

New Bern Parks & Recreation is hosting the city’s 5th annual New Year’s Eve Block Party on Saturday, December 31st, beginning at 5:30pm. The event is sponsored by Riverside Automotive Group and will be held downtown at the intersection of Pollock and Craven streets. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

The New Year’s Eve Block Party will include family-friendly activities, dancing in the streets, a variety of food trucks, a Kids Fun Zone, DJ party games, magicians, street performances by Imagine Circus and of course, the bear drop. Again this year, Parks & Recreation will host two bear drops: a bear cub drop at 9pm for kids (along the 300 block of Craven Street), and the City Hall bear drop at midnight. For adults, a beer garden will be set up in the 300 block of Pollock Street hosted by the Craven Arts Council.  The Kids Fun Zone will feature a variety of inflatables, a magician, games and prizes.

New this year, the band “Crush” will take the stage for a concert beginning at 8:45pm. “Crush” hails from Raleigh and brings the best songs in pop, rock and country music to the stage. The band will entertain the crowd for approximately 3 hours.

Guests are invited to spend the weekend celebrating the new year. Downtown restaurants will be open, Union Point Park will be lit up with holiday displays and the brand new lighted tunnel, and the ice skating rink will be open at the park.

On Saturday, December 31st, hours of operation will be 10am-2pm and 4pm-8pm. Skate sessions cost $5 and last approximately 45-minutes. The $5 fee includes skate rental, although guests are welcome to bring their own ice skates (no roller skates, rollerblades, or skateboards are allowed).

This event is presented by New Bern Parks & Recreation. For additional information on the New Year’s Eve Block Party, visit the Parks & Recreation webpage online at www.newbernnc.gov or contact Parks & Recreation at (252)639-2901.
