A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Martin County Election Department in North Carolina on February 5, 2025. The request, made by us at IBX News, seeks comprehensive information about all candidates running in the upcoming spring election.
Our request specifically asks for a list of all candidates vying for various offices in the forthcoming elections. The details we seek include each candidate's first, middle, and last names, the office they are running for, their jurisdiction of office, and their party affiliation.
Additionally, we have requested contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization committed to providing accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe access to public records is crucial. It allows us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
Given our role in disseminating information to the public as a media organization, we have also requested a fee waiver for this FOIA request under North Carolina Public Records Law G.S. §132-1.
