City of Elizabeth City Police Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 16.
It is with a heavy heart that the Elizabeth City Police Department announces the passing of retired member, “Colt.”
Colt, a brown and black German Shepard, was born on January 1, 2012. He, along with fellow K-9 Partners “Duke” and “Karma” all joined the force at the same time - in the winter of 2013. While serving on the Elizabeth City Police Department K-9 Unit, Colt did an outstanding job in protecting and serving the Citizens of Elizabeth City. He was trained and certified in detection, tracking, and searches. Colt embraced the mission of the Department and served bravely during his tenure with us.
Sergeant Benjamin J. Martin was Colt’s handler, partner, and best human friend. Upon Colt’s retirement in August of 2019, Colt went to live permanently with Sgt. Martin and became a member of the Martin family. During his golden retirement years, he spent his days running outside, playing fetch, getting treats, and napping.
The Elizabeth City Police Department is truly grateful for the time we had with Colt, and we sincerely appreciate his service with our Department. He was a good boy, and he will be greatly missed.
